Hand-Me-Down
I remember riding around in old cars with my Gramps when I was a child. He was always buying, selling and driving old cars. But I think back then they weren’t really considered “classics” or “old”.
Getting to spend time with my grandparents [“Grands”] always meant old barns full of really cool stuff! These barns were packed full of old cars and car parts. I could, and did, spend hours roaming around looking at parts and sitting in cars that hadn’t moved in decades. Many a youthful hour was spent “driving” these stationary vehicles and fantasizing about actually owning one of them when I got “older”.
And thanks to my Uncle Tom, and a lot of patients, I finally do!
This "old" ’41 Plymouth P-12 Special Deluxe has been in the family for as long as I can remember. I can honestly say I remember almost all of the rides [I might be forgetting one or two] I have ever taken in this ol’ girl. From the times my Grands came to pick my brother and I up to go to family reunions, to the first time my Gramps handed me the keys and let me take her for a spin. This old Plymouth has made a lot of memories for me.
In the early 80’s my Uncle Tom took over caring for her and she lived in his old dairy barn in Ohio. During one of my visits with him we got to talking about all of Gramps' old cars. I told him how I had always hoped to own one of them one day. He asked me what I thought of the ’41 down in the barn. I don’t think you could have pulled the smile off my face with a launching Space Shuttle when he said it was mine if I wanted it!
It took many years of planning, a lot of patients, and a ton of support from my wife and daughter to finally get her to California. She now starts another chapter of her life with a new care giver and a new home. I plan to carry on the tradition of keeping her in the family, one day passing her on to my daughter.
Who knows, maybe one day I will be the “Gramps” that sparks the desire in a youngster's mind, enticing them to take over the family tradition!
A special thank you goes out to my Uncle Tom for trusting me with her care, and to my Gramps who always made me feel special.
